A couple of weeks ago saw another first for Vickerstaff Photography; a Ukrainian Wedding in Manchester to photograph. We were really looking forward to the big day and were so happy when the day started approaching. Ivanka had been super organised and written an in-depth blog about the wedding ceremony so we knew what to expect.

We were invited to attend the wedding rehearsal a few days before the big day, after an unexpected confession for Ivanka and Mass; the rehearsal started and gave us a good idea what to expect the following Saturday. Following the rehearsal, Tory and I headed to the The Place Hotel in the heart of Manchester city as we had never been.  We were truly excited by what we saw and only added to our anticipation for the wedding day to come round so we could get photographing! Well; so I could get photographing!! 🙂

The big day arrived and we found ourselves working with the talented guys at Silk Wedding Videos. The flowers themed with the English Rose and the Ukrainian Sun flower was a great place to start followed by a thousand details. With also their theme of London (where both Ivanka & Ashley both now live) they made a great deal of effort; hiring a London bus to ferry their guests, London underground maps for table plan and description of the day booklets, so so much to capture I thought I would run out of cards before the ceremony….and I have 62gb worth of cards!

The happy couple arrived at the same time in a beautiful vintage Rover. Both arrive at the same time after having a small ritual ceremony at Ivanka’s parents’ home where both father and groom see the bride for the first time and her father gives his blessing. Arriving at the church at the same time meaning they are equals and in union.

Now there were many different rituals, practices and prayers during the ceremony, not only giving me something new to photograph but also giving me plenty of time to move all around the church (even on the balcony). I have found that many wedding ceremonies like this, the priests are usually more than happy for the photographer to do what ever they need to cover the event…brilliant!

Off to the Place Hotel we went; we didn’t have a great deal of time with the couple upon arriving but we made sure to have them after their Ukrainian receiving line; an opportunity for their guests to come up to the wedding party after the wedding breakfast and to wish them luck. It was great photographing the receiving line after the speeches and meal adding to the whole ‘new’ aspect of the day.

After finally getting the happy couple away from their guests for a private portrait session it was time for the first dance, a fox trot ending in a magical kiss.

I think this is your best wedding yet Jamie - some really great documentary images and some imaginative compositions. My fave is the confetti shot - a real corker! Nice that you got a chance to work with Tom from silk, top guy and top videographer
